President Trump remains in excellent health
Other risk factors include obesity, pregnancy and smoking, Krishnan said. People whose jobs require them to stand for long periods of time are also at higher risk.
That’s because veins, especially in the legs, must pump blood back to the heart against gravity, he explained, and they rely on one-way valves and muscles to do the job. But when blood accumulates in large quantities, as can happen from standing for long periods of time, the pressure causes the veins to dilate, and the valves can stretch and leak, leading to venous insufficiency.
Doctors usually start with conservative treatments, such as using elastic stockings to squeeze the legs to help blood return to the heart. They also often recommend that patients elevate their legs for 30 minutes at least three times a day, and sometimes recommend weight loss or resistance training to improve circulation.
If these measures don’t work, doctors may try more intensive treatments, such as sclerotherapy, which injects a chemical solution into the affected vein to close it, or laser thermocoagulation, which can seal the vein. The body then redirects the blood through other, healthier veins.
The White House also mentioned that President Trump has some bruises on his hands. Dr. Barbera attributed this to irritation caused by frequent handshakes and the aspirin the president takes to maintain heart health.
Dr. Barbera said that as part of the comprehensive examination, Trump also underwent blood tests and echocardiograms, all of which were within normal ranges and no heart, kidney or systemic problems were found. He wrote in the memo: "President Trump remains in excellent physical condition."
